Some vehicles are bought. Some are built. And every now and then, one carries a story that makes you stop and look twice. This 1988 Toyota Hilux Rally Bakkie is one of those.
It started life as an original manual 4x4 Hilux, the kind of honest, tough Toyota that earned its reputation the hard way. Somewhere along the line, it was turned into something with a bit more fire in its belly. A Class D rally bakkie. Red, loud, purposeful, and full of attitude.
The current owner bought it years ago and used it in one rally about 13 years back. After that, life moved on and the Hilux stood quietly, almost forgotten, waiting for someone to remember what it once was. A couple of months ago, we collected it, cleaned it up, and serviced the carburettors. And just like that, the old rally bakkie started coming back to life.
This is not a polished showroom classic. It is better than that.
It wears its story honestly. The marks, the rally gear, the roll cage, the fenders, the twin side-draught Webers, the bucket seats, the spare wheels in the back, the Terratrip rally computer on the dash. Every bit of it tells you this Hilux was built for dust, noise, nerves, and proper old-school motorsport.
This bakkie would suit someone who understands character. A rally enthusiast, a collector, a historic motorsport fan, or someone who wants a very different Toyota with a proper backstory.
It is rough in places, honest in others, and full of soul.
